Song Background
Ever had one of those dreams where you wake up in a cold sweat, thinking everything you saw in the dream was completely real? And had God speaking to you as well? How about having that exact dream several times over the course of a few years? Well, that is the setup for this song! I have a recurring dream that is filled with such sorrow and vivid color, that I wake with the very real feeling I have seen the future. The dream is the same every time I have it-- I am riding through various scenes of life on Christs' horse… a powerful horse with eyes of fire. The horse takes me through time and I begin to see the pain and sorrow of what we, as God's pinnacle creation, have done to destroy everything he made us to be. I see Christ crying tears over us, knowing the sacrifice he will ultimately make to save us from the Father's wrath. In the end we are raptured and all the tears and pain are taken away. We will finally be home. While the song is very long, the original version had a few more stanzas to cover all the detailed scenes of the dream. I get chills when I sing this tune - we will finally be home once Christ comes to get us! Praise be to God! Amen!
Revelation 6:5
“(5) When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, ‘Come!’ And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand.”
We Rode On - Lyrics
I dreamed of a horse with eyes of fire
To mount him and ride became my desire
And we began to ride… Oh Lord we began to ride
On his side were the words "King of Kings"
And I knew his purpose was to show me the things
That Christ has done…
What Christ has done... Oh Lord!
What Christ did for me…
Oh Lord, but the horse rode on.
Time stood still as we made our way
Through streets filled with misery, death, and pain
But we still rode on… Oh Lord we just ro-ad on
I saw suffering and man's evil lust
No one held love, no one held trust
But we rode on…
And we rode on, and on… Oh Lord!
We just rode on…
Oh Lord, we just rode on...
We rode out onto the open sea
Across the shores people gathered to see
But we just rode on... Oh Lord, we just rode on
Unimaged color painted the sky!
Lightning flashed, and the end came to our ride
But the horse rode on!
The sky split in two! In two! Oh Lord!
The sky split in two…
Oh Lord, the horse rode on!
I fell to my knees as Christ appeared!
His mercy and love all became clear
And we cried tears of joy… Oh Lord, we cried tears of joy!
With a breath we all rose into the air!
We left behind all the chaos and fear
But the horse rode on...
We were finally home! We were home! Oh Lord!
We were finally home…
Oh Lord, but the horse rode on…
